DO NOT WEEP

2D OVERLAYS ON A 3D ANIMATED ENVIRONMENT

Do Not Weep: Videos

The premise of this short film is an exploration of the grieving process. I was the director of a group of five students during the Spring semester in 2014 while we studied at the AIB (Academy for International Education) in Bonn, Germany.

Our team’s goal for this project was to create a piece that had the flowing feel of 2D animation, but with correct proportions. Since none of the members had any experience with traditional 2D animation, we relied on our knowledge and prowess in 3D animation to be the basis for our 2D forms. Rough polygonal models of the two characters were rigged, having been separated into distinct pieces which were rigid-bound to the rig itself. As the lead animator, I supervised the construction and design of the rig and made instructions for the other animators on how to properly use it. Once the storyboard had been fleshed out, I animated the rig for the shots involving the female character. I also critiqued and fixed the male character’s animation, done by other members of my team. Once the 3D animation was complete, I supervised the drawing of each 2D frame over the rendered 3D frames, making sure that the lines were the correct thickness and style and correcting for volume or fluidity of form where needed. In addition, I personally animated the female character’s hair and tail for the entire film, with the exception of the first shot. Instead, I quality-checked the first scene for the female character’s hair, which was executed by another animator in my team. In addition, I quality-checked each aspect of the pipeline as it developed to make sure that our work was matching the initial concept and design.
